Increase in consumption after confinement
After Spain went through one of the most difficult moments in its history with the arrival of the pandemic and subsequently a lockdown, consumption has increased greatly. Compared to the previous year, consumption has increased by around 14% and demand for products by 12%. The sectors in which it has increased the most have been fresh products and also packaged food, which grew by more than 15% compared to the previous year. The great beneficiary in this regard has been Mercadona, which is the one that occupies the largest part of the market, although it has ceded market share to Carrefour and Lidl, which occupy the TOP3.
Another curious fact is that, although consumption has increased, the visit to stores has decreased by 3%, so it can be deduced that individuals fill the baskets more and also make use of e-commerce, which has obtained a maximum historical. The director of Kantar Worldpanel, Florencio García, who is the one who has carried out this study, has emphasized that there will be new scenarios in distribution and that innovation, advertising and promotions will also be given more importance in the future.
