Intra Exports - EU and World
Spain is one of the largest producers in the world in Olive Oil, since in Andalusia alone, it is estimated that there are more than 3,000 large-scale oil mills.
Although the 2018/19 campaign for Spain has been very good, since it was expected that there would be more than 30% than the previous campaign (not in the case of the rest of the world), exports have been, for the most part, for neighbor countries. According to the study “Market Situation in the Olive Oil and Table Olives Sectors” provided by the European Commission in which it focuses on the October - January campaign period, it reveals that the largest partner in Spain regarding this product is Portugal, with 58%, more than 20,000 tons. The next country is Italy, with 11.4% and more than 3,000 tons.
The largest EU partners in terms of exports is the US with a volume of more than 70,000 tons, 18.5% more than the previous season, followed by Brazil and Japan, with 22,845 and 19,039 tons, a -10.7 and 23.8% respectively, compared to the previous campaign. Brazil, compared to the previous 2017/18 campaign, imported Olive Oil 10.7% less.
The US remains the main partner of the European Union with 33% of total exports, followed as we have said previously from Brazil, which although it has imported less, it is still in second place. The podium and the fourth place are closed by Japan and China with 9 and 8% of total exports.
In this study we have studied a specific period in which, due to different circumstances, the campaign can be delayed or advanced. This 2018/19 campaign has overdue the account, so this data may be biased. We will have to wait for future studies to be able to draw more precise conclusions.
