Rising Market: Chile
In the Annual Report on the National Olive Oil Market, developed by ChileOliva, they have studied the national and international market for olive oil. From the 2010 campaign to the 2019 campaign, Chile has increased its production by more than 120%, reaching a total production of 18,500 tons in this last campaign. 60% of this production, which represents more than 11,000 tons, has been to supply the foreign market, such as, for example, Brazil, the US, China and Spain.
The surface that has been used for olive cultivation has been increasing since 2006 with 6,000 hectares, until 2014 with 25,000 hectares. The distribution of the plantation has been mostly in three main areas, the Metropolitan Region with 29%, followed by Maule with 27% and finally the O'Higgins Region with 23%, the rest is distributed in different regions. Also, the variety that has been planted the most has been Arbequina, with 57% of the total, followed by Arbosana and Frantoio with 20% and 10% respectively.
The increase in production in Chile in recent years has been very large, but it is still far from the largest producers in the world. To put ourselves in a position, Spain, which is the world's largest producer of olive oil, produced more than 1,200,000 tons in the 2017/2018 campaign, followed by Italy with 428,000 tons and Greece with 346,000 tons. Although it is still far below the large producers, Chile has known how to take advantage of its olive growing capabilities and become a great exporter of olive oil.
