VAT 0% by the OCU
In recent weeks, the Ministry of Consumption has been developing a worsening of the Value Added Tax (VAT) on sugary drinks. This measure is intended to reduce the consumption of these beverages to take care of the health of consumers. In this case, the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has considered that this measure is questionable due to the precariousness of many families due to the pandemic and later the economic crisis. In this sense, they have proposed that to encourage the consumption of healthy foods this VAT is lowered to 0% on products such as fresh food, legumes, nuts, fresh meat, whole grains, virgin and extra virgin olive oil, fruits and vegetables, among other products. This system is already being considered in other neighboring countries such as Ireland and the United Kingdom. It is also considering a labeling according to the products and also an advertising control to limit consumption and that consumers can choose better, since they have more information in their hands to make better decisions.
